Transforming e-waste into a home server

Say nothing about the machine

Storage almost full.

Google gives you 15 GB free, shared between Gmail, Drive and Photos. Apple gives you 5 GB.

Everyone in the room has seen this message

So you sat there choosing which photographs to delete.

Pause. Ask who has done it.

Meanwhile, an old computer sits in a cupboard.

It can keep your photographs and block adverts for the whole house.

The two jobs in this talk

Think of it as an appliance

It sits in a cupboard and does a couple of jobs, like the router and the TV box you already have.

The word server puts people off. Say appliance from here on.

Job one, live: your photographs, kept at home

  • The phone app copies each new photograph to it
  • Browse them by date in any web browser
  • No cloud account, and the only limit is the size of the drive

Immich, on the YunoHost machine, opened in the browser on this laptop

Job two, live: adverts blocked for the house

  • Set it once on your router, and adverts and trackers stop on every device on the wi-fi
  • That includes the television, where you cannot install anything

AdGuard Home. Leave the blocked count on screen while you talk. Some televisions ignore the router's setting.

Before you start

  • It sits in your house, so keep another copy of your photographs somewhere else
  • It needs looking after: install its updates now and then

Say this before anyone asks

Three checks on the machine in the cupboard

  • 01 Memory6 GB at least, 8 GB is better. More can be added.
  • 02 Processor64-bit, with two cores or more.
  • 03 StorageRoom for your photographs. A bigger drive can be fitted.

Immich's published minimums. Blocking adverts needs far less.

The way in: YunoHost

  • Install it on the old computer from a memory stick
  • Add Immich and AdGuard Home from its web page

Not taught here. Come and ask us at the bench.

An old laptop. A five-pound memory stick.

These slides ran on it: Linux Mint, booted from the stick, nothing on its disk touched. The photographs and the advert blocking ran on YunoHost, on another old computer.

The reveal
